CHARACTER
Name: Lucien Iyesterius
Age: He appears in his mid twenties, but in truth he’s very old. He doesn’t disclose how old, and in truth he’s not completely certain when he was born anymore. Generally speaking, he’s probably around 800 to 1000 years old.
Appearance: Lucien is about six foot two inches, with an extremely fair complexion and a moderately muscular build. He’s obviously trained his body, and upkeeps his build with constant exercise. His hair is a natural fiery red, though the ends are preferentially dyed an orange-yellow color, giving the illusion of flame-tipped hair. He happens to like his hair that way, not that he’s particularly vain. His eyes are bright emerald green, and his smile is just as electrified as his eye color. Were one to look well enough, they would notice the pointed edges of his canines peeking just past his lower lip. Lucien Iyesterius is a vampire.
His clothing is neither overly simple, nor greatly extravagant. He tends to wear dark, form-fitting shirts with breathable pants, along with hardy boots. His favorite coat is bisected at the back, allowing the attachment of a sword to his belt. He wears the sheath of his blade horizontally during training, and as he is left handed, the hilt faces this arm. It’s easier for him to draw this way by now. The man also has a scarf which he is fond of, black in color, and he usually wears it as an accessory.
Lucien carries himself with a confident air. He doesn’t particularly look down on people, but neither does he think of himself as less. He walks with an easygoing gait, and is very expressive, particularly with his facial expressions and his laughter. He can also be loud with his arm movements when he wants to be. He has a Scottish accent, but it isn’t extremely overpowering. He makes himself understood when he wants to be understood. Every once in a while, especially when under some influence, his accent will become annoyingly thick.
Chosen PB: I do use game character images for Lucien, from a moderately rare game known as Tales of the Abyss (of the character Luke fon Fabre). As there have been no applications I have seen for any of the characters from this game present, I don’t feel there’s too much a problem using them.
Personality: Lucien expresses himself with a sunny disposition, and doesn’t tend to be so much the pessimist as the realist. This is because in his world, he is a very special sort of trader; the trader of not only goods, but information. Being so old, he has acquired the ability to be bright and charismatic for the job. It should always be noted, however, that because he is an information bank, he will learn about you, and he will trade information for his benefit. It’s nothing personal, it’s just how he’s gotten along for years. Under the farce of his superficiality, the man is actually pretty cold and calculating. It goes hand in hand with his realism, and he will tell you, when pushed, what you need to hear.
Lucien’s longevity is granted by his existence as a vampire. Born and turned in Scotland, he’s become the son of the world, well-traveled and well-learned. He has very good memory, which has allowed him to learn many languages, several if only in understanding. He likes knowing what people have to say about him. Regardless of such, he’s the best at English with a prevalent Scottish accent. And when he doesn’t want you to know what he’s saying or he doesn’t feel like expressing himself in a universal language, well. He’s not above switching to a language few will understand at all.
With his bright and cheerful personality—and also a token of his age—Lucien has become an extremely patient person. He will take little insult to anything, and he’s not terribly patriotic. The only way you might get a rise out of him is if you pull something from his past and lay it before him. This is incredibly difficult, as the man is impossibly secretive and doesn’t share information unless he is given equal return. That being said, he does have a breaking point, and it would be a blunder to reach it. Not only is he a vampire, but he is classified as an Elder Vampire in his world, given how old he is, and he does indeed have a great amount of power granted by age. This is, of course, barring the fact that he is Scottish, and that by heritage, he’s been taught that physical prowess is a desired trait.
Lucien has a secretly mischievous side. He likes to play tricks on others, in a somewhat playful manner. There’s something serious about setting a tripline for someone to stop them from finding you, but also something amusing from seeing them hang upside-down by an ankle. It satisfies him to catch people in his interesting traps.
World Information: Lucien is a part of a semi-post-apocalyptic world in which vampires have run over the earth and overhunted human beings. There are now few to feed the hordes, though Lucien is only lightly affected due to how rich he is and how long he can go without having blood.
History: In his world, Lucien Iyesterius is the go-to man for anyone, human, vampire, and otherwise, seeking information. His home is outfitted with a pair of Cray supercomputers—somewhat excessive to some, but he doesn’t think so—as well as a vast multitude of terabyte drives all interconnected to several monitors and other input connections. From this workstation he can organize all of his findings into vast, categorized databases. He rather likes it. It’s a step up from the handwritten historian approach. For a price, he’ll be willing to impart a piece of his immense database to you. Or if you’re bartering for something else, he’s definitely a man who knows how to find things, and he’s good at making decent clothing if he must, as well as trading for rarities from around the globe.
Lucien keeps to the British Isles pretty regularly, mostly because he likes the feel of being close to home. This is because he was, before being Turned, born Scottish. His life as a human is one of Lucien’s best-kept secrets, but he will at times admit that his heritage from previous generations was not strictly Scottish…as well as that he was born somewhere in the Highlands. That’s about it. Anything else that can be gained of his habits and such is relatively recent and has to do with his aforementioned profession.
Because of said profession, Lucien does like being hard to locate. Even within the confines of the British Isles he’s hard to pinpoint because of how often and spontaneously he’ll move. If you find him, you deserve the information he has. He does run a website upon which he will offer those who are of an inquiring mind a chance at his database. Be ready to pay very well, information on your enemies doesn’t come cheap? Why?
Well, when one imparts weaknesses and other unsavory information on an adversary, it tends to create enemies. Lucien has a great deal of those. While he’s not a coward, he’s also not stupid and doesn’t wish to get into a brawl if he can help it. His livelihood is extremely important to him, and it has been threatened before. One of his greatest enemies is the vampire Syphus Alsheer, and coincidentally, Syphus is also an Elder who blooded a vampiric anomaly, one who Lucien has kept in tight contact with. The two play a dangerous game with each other, as Syphus is the most powerful and feared vampire of their era, a title which Lucien doesn’t care to contest him for. He’s had his chance, and he has a scar on his neck to remind him of why he hides from others while selling his skill of gathering information. This is why he tends to wear his scarf, or high-collared coats and shirts.
Dubbing himself as the “Child of the World” is no small title. He’s traveled across the globe for centuries and lived in every major country at least once. His favorites include Scotland, England, France, Canada, Singapore, Italy, Norway, and New Zealand. He tries to steer clear of the United States. So much mess there, and waaaay too many young upstarts.
In his long life, Lucien has learned many skills. Swordsmanship, gathering information, making weapons and clothing…and customer service, of course!
Strengths/Weaknesses: Lucien is smart, well-educated and worldly. He can lift heavy objects that no one else would be able to, and carry them long distances if needed. He’s also charismatic and likeable.
Unfortunately, when he takes a shine to you he does like having a little fun at your expense. And he is vindictive, rather like a cat. So if you bother him, he’ll play tricks of a far nastier sort on you.
With his charismatic nature comes a sense of chivalry. Both combine to make him rather persuasive. He needs to be, since he only feeds from willing donors. No point soiling your hands when people pay for what you know, right?
Because of his chivalrous nature, he feels a need to protect those weaker than he is, which can prove a fatal distraction. And whenever he is not feeling chivalrous, he can be cold-hearted and collected. He isn’t above suggesting something that will further his ends, or being the one who says what no one else wants to hear.
Lucien is, regrettably, a slave to his hunger for blood, however loose. If he loses too much blood, he will inevitably fall into an barely controlled, if at all restrained, hunger. And if he has been fasting, the smell of blood will be an annoyance.
Abilities: Lucien has an eidetic, or “photographic” memory. Whatever he sees, he remembers. He doesn’t advertise the fact that he can remember, especially since despite having this photographic memory, he has trouble remembering vivid detail in several events. This is probably because of how long he has lived. In fact, he speculates that there are a few things he has suppressed or forgotten altogether from his deep past to make room for more information, which is why he very much enjoys his database.
In addition to his memory, Lucien is also gifted with superhuman speed and strength. He’s faster than a cheetah by far, and many times stronger. Moreso when he’s fed.
Lucien is very well-versed in swordsmanship. He’s a little less skilled in footwork, but makes up for it in sheer power and speed. Because he’s left-handed, his tendencies are flipped, something he finds has thrown off previous foes.
On the subject of feeding, he is able to suppress his need for as long as a month without feeling heavy effects. If necessary he will abstain for anywhere between then and half a year. He becomes sluggish by one month though, so he tends to hermit around his home when he needs to fast.
As well, he can withstand grievous injury and heal fast. His healing abilities when well-fed are extremely accelerated, and mortal injuries will not kill him so much as incapacitate him for up to a day. Unfed, he heals slower. It can take up to a week or more to heal from injuries. He hasn’t healed from a full decapitation before, and he’d rather not test if that’s possible.
First Person: [Well well well. This wasn’t what he expected when he’d woken up today. Actually, he was expecting a source to show up at his home, so being here on this train is kind of an inconvenience]
Sae whit’s thes all about? Nae of’en Ah’ll be thae ain bein’ pranked. Enough. Yoo’ve had yoor laugh, tell me whit’s up. Syphus, ye gettin’ bored? Ah’m sure ye kin dae better.
[He sounds unimpressed as he gets up off the train, not realizing that his newfangled pocketwatch was half-dangling out of his pants and activated. Personally he’s far more interested in peering around and trying to figure out where he even is. This obviously wasn’t anywhere NEAR London, where he’s crashing. Running a hand through his long hair, he disembarks from the train, frowning and seeing the posters.]
Ruby City, eh?
Third Person: Lucien smirked as he checked over his email for any new prospective “clients.” He loved winding these people around his finger, and keeping them constantly returning back to him with small treats here and there. Lucien posted up news on his site every once in a while. It was always just a little tidbit to tease the masses with. Usually it pertained to a person that had dissatisfied him either with payment, attitude, or something else entirely.
Yesterday, he’d dropped a little love on his favorite foe, Syphus Alsheer. Honestly now, the man begged for it with the way he lived. The finer things in life? Ha! They were all dead, and dying with little to no prey. There was hardly a fine life here, unless you were Lucien Iyesterius. He always had a friend to rely on, and a wrist to nip a few drops from. Pity. He couldn’t find any demon blood, and he rather enjoyed different varieties.
The hit on Syphus had yielded quite a few hits, most of them begging for further information. This wouldn’t be bought cheap, not if it was from Lucien.
“Ye little upstarts, ye cannae afford thes piece,” he muttered in sheer amusement as he cleared the requests. Even he wouldn’t sell Syphus out so cheaply.
A hand strayed up to his throat, and he rubbed at the scar there idly. Deep and jagged, it crossed in a lazy diagonal slope. He remembered. He respected. And, as he reached out to grab a bottle of Scotch next to his keyboard, he reflected on how much he could hate just one man.
